What is considered to be the historical first work of fiction?

I was told the first work of fiction was the story of Shalome and John the Baptist, but cannot find that to be true. If someone can tell me the stories historical significance or answer the question, I would be most thankful.

The Epic of Gilgamesh is commonly held as the first piece of published literature, and it is definitely fiction.
